«To develop an independent short message app that protects users’ data from misuse» was the founding purpose of Threema GmbH. It was founded in 2012 by three Swiss software developers. The name of the app already gives away the idea – Threema stands for «End-to-End Encrypted Messaging Application», abbreviated EEEMA. The first three Es were replaced by the English «Three». Today, the approximately 12 employees at the Pfäffikon SZ location take care of the further development of the app as well as the support of the more than 10 million app users.
